School students send inspiring letters with messages of support to cancer warriors treated at Apollo Proton Ca...
“My dear friend, life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about dancing in the rain. Likewise, you bounce back with that energy to fight for anything come what may.” This was one of the 100 letters written by students of Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, Chennai, to cancer patients who are getting treated at the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC).On receiving the letter from one of the students, 55-year-old Mr. S. Nambiar’s eyes welled up with tears of joy. He said, “This is a very kind gesture and it brought back many old memories.”In this modern age, written communication is mostly done either through emails, WhatsApp messages or other social media interactions, but there’s always a special joy in receiving a letter from near and dear ones and more so, from a stranger. To evoke the feeling of happiness in receiving a letter and to build a strong bond of friendship, APCC in collaboration with Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, has launched a unique initiative called ‘The Warriors’ Smile’ wherein students write encouraging and affectionate letters to patients undergoing cancer treatment. The activity will be organised every month in line with Apollo Cancer Centres’ initiative of ‘Tender Loving Care’.It is aimed at adding compassion and positivity into the lives of cancer warriors so that they can stay strong in their journey to win over cancer.Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director – Operations, Group Oncology & International, Apollo Cancer Centres, said, “Apollo has always been synonymous with the best-in-class treatment and defined the level of excellence in every initiative. From creating awareness among the masses about cancer, bringing cancer conversations to the forefront, and prioritizing patients at every step of the treatment, Apollo has created a world of its own built on the foundation of Tender Loving Care. I take pride in this initiative and the positive impact it is destined to create on patients today and tomorrow.”On the occasion, Mr Harish Trivedi, Chief Executive Officer, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, said, “This unique initiative ‘The Warriors’ Smile’, aligned with our mission of providing our patients with the best possible care, is bound to have a profound impact on their motivation and strength. It is splendid how some gentle words and caring actions can create ripples of soothing the worst of pains in the hardest times. I would also like to thank Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, for associating with us for this encouraging step towards promoting happiness and liveliness.”With a motto of promoting a light and happy environment for the cancer warriors, this initiative stands true to the cause of keeping the patients calm and persuade them to go strong on their journey of healing.

IPL Sunrisers join hearing implanted girls, to celebrate 3 years of ‘Hearing Impaired Girl Child Project’ init...
Over 70 hearing impaired girls benefit from the project, since its launch by IPL Sunrisers HyderabadMay 3rd, 2018: IPL Sunrisers team members, Rashid Khan, Carlos Brathwaite, Sandeep Sharma, Siddarth Kaul and Tom Moody, joined the celebration of over 70 hearing impaired girls benefitting from the ‘Hearing Impaired Girl Child Project’ (HIGCP), initiated by Apollo Hospitals & SAHI, three years ago, on Thursday at Apollo Medical College, Jubilee Hills. The project was incidentally launched by the Sunrisers team in 2015. Also present on the occasion were Dr. Sangita Reddy, Ms. Upasana Kamineni & ENT Surgeons Dr. EC Vinaya Kumar, Dr. K Rambabu, Dr. Jaswinder Singh and other consultants. The IPL team members later interacted with the girls, besides playing cricket with them. As per WHO estimates, approximately 63 million people suffer from significant hearing impairment every year in India. 4-5 babies in every 1000 born suffer from severe to profound hearing loss in India. If left untreated in the first 3-5 years of life, these children end up with hearing and speech disorders throughout their lifetime.HIGCP has been helping hearing impaired girls under the age of fifteen, by providing the state-of-the-art Cochlear implant and performing the surgery, free of cost. HIGCP bears the entire cost of approximate Rs. 8 lakhs per child. The one-year Auditory Verbal Therapy required Post-surgery, is funded by Pink Crocodile, an international NGO.We have a strong rationale to focus on the girl child for this project, says Dr E.C. Vinay Kumar, Head, Dept. of ENT, Apollo Health City and Secretary, SAHI. The reasons are varied, a hearing-impaired girl is at a greater risk of facing abuse both physically and mentally. Historically too, the needs of a female child is often neglected by parents and the prohibitive cost of treatment only inhibits them, they instead prefer to divert their limited resources to address their son’s aspirations. Also, a hearing and speech impaired girl is in greater danger of remaining unemployed, unmarried or being ill-treated at her in-law’s place, he adds.Cochlear Implant Surgery will empower a hearing-impaired girl child, help her evolve into a respectable citizen, besides enabling her to achieve her dreams and ambitions. She will be able to live life on her own terms, says Dr Rambabu, ENT Surgeon, Apollo Health City & Director Medical Services, SAHI.About Society to Aid the Hearing Impaired (SAHI)In November of 2004, a group of ENT surgeons, audiologists, and hospital management personnel, united with concerned citizens, to form SAHI. It is an Indian NGO that aims at helping underprivileged children with impaired hearing. SAHI mainly seeks to identify and aid children living in rural areas, with little or no access to modern medical treatment.Since its establishment, SAHI has been addressing this problem by means of conducting camps in remote areas of the state. Children with learning disabilities or hearing loss are given hearing aids by SAHI and those with ear diseases are given free ear surgeries.About Apollo HospitalsIt was in 1983, that Dr.Prathap Reddy made a pioneering endeavour by launching India’s first corporate hospital – Apollo Hospital in Chennai. India’s first Robot-Assisted Cardiac Surgery was successfully performed by Apollo Hospitals, Chennai on a 93-y...
Apollo Hospitals, Chennai has successfully performed robotic cardiac surgery on the oldest patient in India at its dedicated Robot-Assisted Cardiac Surgery Unit in Greams Road. Dr. MM. Yusuf and his team has created a milestone by performing the Robotic Assisted Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) on a 93-year-old patient. The team has performed complex robotic-assisted minimally invasive cardiac surgery on patients above 70 years of age.Even during the pandemic, Apollo Hospitals lead the way in conducting Robotic Aided Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Graft surgeries (CABG) and saving lives. A 93-year-old man had robotic CABG surgery, making him India’s oldest patient to date. Many patients above the age of 70 and 80 has been successfully saved in the past few months through robotic cardiac surgeries.Robotic cardiac surgery is a minimally invasive method that allows patients to return to their daily lives considerably more quickly than open-heart surgery. Surgeons have greater vision, precision, accuracy, and control, and the patients will have less discomfort, fewer post-operative wound infections, less scarring, and improved respiration when undergoing a Robotic assisted procedure. Recovery is quick, with less time in the hospital, quicker mobilisation, and rehabilitation. This is the best option for patients with diabetes and older patients.Dr. MM Yusuf, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals and team have operated on many patients above the age of 70 and about 10 patients over the age of 80 in the past few months. The oldest patient who underwent Robotic assist CABG is 93-years-old and he is also the oldest patient who underwent CABG surgery in India till date. In octogenarians with multiple co- morbidities especially during the COVID pandemic, Robotic Assist CABG proved a boon to treat them with least post-operative complications and enabled quick recovery. These patients were not suitable for open surgery and would have been left with no definitive treatment options if Robotic surgery was not available.Speaking about the procedure Dr. MM Yusuf, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Minimally invasive Cardiac surgery avoids sternal split and aids quick recovery. Robotic assist CABG is the least invasive cardiac surgery procedure available now. This surgery involves making tiny holes in the chest cavity through which surgery is performed with the help of the DaVinci Robotic system. Most patients also do not have any cut in the legs since the 2 arteries in the chest wall are used to perform the bypass surgery. Patients have very little blood loss and pain and recover quickly. Hospital stay is usually 2 to 3 days and return to full normal activity will be in 2 to 3 weeks as opposed to 3 months or more with open CABG. This unique procedure is performed in very few centres across the globe.”Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group, said, “Our mission has always been to introduce the latest medical technology to India for the benefit of our patients. We want more people to be able to take advantage of our hospital’s cutting-edge surgical and medical treatment. At Apollo Hospitals, we put the patient first in all we do and deliver world-class treatment that is both accessible and affordable. We are convinced that such medical discoveries will alter the lives of many more individuals who are unable to undergo traditional heart surgery.”Robotic Assisted CABG is the least invasive method of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Blood loss and pain are negligible. Hospital stay is very short and recovery is extremely quick. This procedure is suitable to treat many patients with single and multi-vessel vessel coronary artery disease. Patients can return back to full normal activity with two weeks.

Apollo in partnership with RNTCP, commemorates the World TB Day, by releasing an animation film and hosting fl...
Hyderabad, March 23, 2018: As part of the Public Private Partnership initiative to control Tuberculosis, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad and RNTCP (Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program), Telangana, jointly hosted the World TB Day – 2018 program, on the eve of World TB Day(March 24th),on Friday at Apollo Health City. Each year, world-over the day is commemorated to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB) and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The theme of World TB Day 2018 – “Wanted: Leaders for a TB-free world”– focuses on building commitment across globally in all sectors – including governments, NGOs, private partners in the fight against TB. The program was attended by Chief Guest Dr. Ch. Surya Prakash, Joint Director (TB) and STO– Telangana; Guests of Honor Dr. K. Hari Prasad, President, Hospitals Division, Apollo Hospitals and Dr. Suneetha Narreddy, Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Apollo Hospitals, patients, volunteers and public. An animation film on TB was released and a Flash mob dance was performed on the occasion to sensitize the society about the disease.Despite significant progress over the last few decades, TB continues to be the top infectious killer worldwide, claiming over 4,500 lives a day. The emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) poses a major health security threat and could risk gains made in the fight against TB.The epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) is likened to the tip of an iceberg, with significant numbers unreached by the public health systems, globally. In India with an estimated incidence of 2.8 million, only 1.7 million TB cases were notified in 2015. Over a million cases are missing from the national notification system, posing a severe threat to the efforts towards ending TB by 2035, as per the ‘End TB strategy.’ Most of these seek care outside the national TB program in the private sector which is the first point of contact for nearly 80% of the general population. There is currently no mechanism in place in the private sector to follow up patients for adherence and treatment completion and response to treatment is not known. To overcome this precarious situation mainly in the private sector, Apollo Hospitals in partnership with The Union South East Asia office, supported by Eli Lilly Foundation piloted an innovative eHealth intervention to engage corporate hospitals for TB notification and adherence support. As part of this a software was developed, which interfaces with ‘Nikshay’ –the Government’s web-based case-based notification system; and facilitates reminders for treatment adherence. Counselling services are provided through a trained counsellor as a follow up to the messages sent. The program was initiated in June 2015 and has till date reported over 700, as against a mere 1700 patients reported from the entire combined AP and Telangana in the private sector, in the same time period. Apollo has already expanded this program to all the Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad and is working on expanding the same to other cities as well.About Apollo HospitalsIt was in 1983, that Dr. Prathap Reddy made a pioneering endeavour by launching India’s first corporate hospital – Apollo Hospital in Chennai. 1st Heart Transplant Surgery At Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad
Traffic police led by ACP- Panjagutta, Padmanabha Reddy ensured reaching the cadaver heart in flat eight minutes from Yashoda Secunderabad to Apollo Jubilee HillsHyderabad, 9th December, 2013: Apollo Group of Hospitals, which performs the largest number of solid organ transplants in India is pleased to announce the first HEART TRANSPLANT SURGERY at Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad, Jubilee Hills. This life saving heart transplant operation was done at Apollo Heart Institute by a team of specialist doctors led by Dr. Vijay Dikshit, Chief of Cardiothoracic surgery on the night of November 11, 2013.According to Dr Dikshit, the patient Veer Anjaneyulu , a 19 yr old pharmacy student, resident of Karampuri Mandal, Guntur was uffering from a condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy, where the function of heart muscle is severely depressed. All kinds of medical therapy were tried but nothing could relieve his symptoms. He was repeatedly admitted for breathing difficulty and swelling of the body. He was not able to even sit and eat on his own. He was finally diagnosed as having End Stage heart failure and hence advised heart transplant. While waiting for a compatible donor his condition further deteriorated and he was admitted to the ICU multiple times for further management. His kidney, liver and other organs also started failing along with further worsening of cardiac function. He was kept alive with multiple medicines to support his blood pressure and heart function. On the night of 11 November personnel of the Jeevandan Project of Government of Andhra Pradesh informed us that a donor heart was available at another hospital, at the other end of the city. The donor heart was quickly assessed and found that it is suitable for Veer Anjaneyulu the recipient. A Team of Cardiac Surgeons went to the hospital where the donor was, harvested the heart and quickly transported it to Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad where the donor was ready for the transplant surgery. The time taken to harvest the donor’s heart and transport it to the hospital where the donor is, has a huge impact on the success of heart transplantation surgery. The Jeevandhan Team and the City Traffic Police supported this process and played a significant role in giving a new lease of life to a 19 year old.Pre-operative to preparation, the surgical procedure and post-operative management for a Heart transplantation are complex and demand a high degree of skill, advanced technology and a committed team. Veer Anjaneyulu benefitted from the dedication and commitment of a large team of cardiac surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses, technicians and support staff and the post surgery recovery period has been largely uneventful.Veer Anjaneyulu is now discharged. He is a happy man- walking, eating on his own and watching the latest movies. His kidney and liver function have completely recovered. On this occasion Mrs. Sangeeta Reddy, MD, Apollo Hospital, congratulated the team for their success and the Apollo Team hopes to continue this endeavor in the future also. The gift of life given by the donor will surely inspire the millions who would like to do the same and provide hope for those who have end stage heart disease in our country. She said, Out of the 3500 heart transplants done allover the world, 2500 were done in USA alone this year. In our country heart transplant hasn’t yet taken off, only around 100 or so have been done since 1995 and needs spreading of awareness. She said a heart transplant costs around 2 crores abroad, but can be done for Rs 15 lakhs in India. The Apollo Institutes of Transplant is one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive solid transplant programs. The program offers a host of state of the art services and since its inception the Institutes have completed over 6700 kidney transplants and over 775 liver transplants. Apollo Health City, pioneers the state-of-the-art Robot-assisted Angioplasty, in the combined Telugu states!
Apollo Health City, pioneers the state-of-the-art Robot-assisted Angioplasty, in the combined Telugu states!Hyderabad, September 23rd, 2022: Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, has pioneered the state-of-the-art Robot-assisted Angioplasty system in the combined Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, by launching this next generation cardiac care service at its hospital at Jubilee Hills, today. Robot assisted interventional procedures bring a paradigm shift in interventional cardiology in this part of the country by laying special thrust on precision care and speedy recovery, which immensely benefits the patient, while easing the occasional human errors.Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, is acclaimed for over three decades for its breakthrough procedures. Several of these innovations published in reputed national and international journals, were acknowledged and commended by the medical fraternity world over. Having excelled in the field of coronary interventions with a significant volume of CHIP interventions, the Hospital is foraying into robot-assisted angioplasty procedure, for the first time in the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.“Robotic assisted coronary intervention carries a lot of potential as it promises a level of precision of stent placement which only high experienced cardiologists are capable of and it also reduces radiation exposure for both patient and clinician. I am happy to share that this is yet another step forward in terms of patient-centric medical innovation” says Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group.Coronary angioplasty is a procedure performed to clear blocks in the arteries of the heart and restore blood flow. With the introduction of robotics in the field, this intervention will now be performed using a set of joysticks and a touchscreen, that serves as an extension to the cardiologist’s hands. This enables the expert cardiologists to have incredible technical benefits like better procedural control, more accurate lesion length calculations, enhanced visualisation, precision in stent placement and reductions in radiation exposure. Robot-assisted angioplasty represents the dawn of a new era in interventional cardiology. This novel treatment procedure paves the way for greater precision in clearing the blocks and placing the stents, thus enhancing the already stupendous success rate of Apollo Health City, Hyderabad.Robot-assisted angioplasty enables standardisation of the angioplasty procedure besides bringing greater precision and reduced exposure to radiation during the procedure. All this means shorter procedure time, less exposure to radiation, better outcomes, greater comfort, speedy recovery and lesser duration of hospital stay for patients. Till date we have performed 15 robotic assisted angioplasties successfully out of which 1 left main stenting, 1 venous graft angioplasty & 5 double vessel angioplasties without any complications, says Dr P.C. Rath, Senior Consultant and Director, Interventional Cardiology, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills.About Apollo HospitalsIt was in 1983, that Dr Prathap C Reddy made a pioneering endeavour by launching India’s first corporate hospital – Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. Now, as Asia’s foremost trusted integrated healthcare group, its presence includes over 12,000 beds across 72 Hospitals and 4500 pharmacies, over 120 Primary Care clinics and 650 Diagnostic centres, 700 plus Teleclinics, over 15 medical education centres and a Research Foundation with a focus on global Clinical Trials.
