Apollo Cancer Centers launched ArtCan, an initiative to raise awareness about Breast Cancer
The Apollo Cancer Centers (ACC) launched ArtCan, a unique initiative which uses art as a medium to spread awareness on Breast Cancer. Apollo Cancer Centers joined hands with mural artists and survivors to curate art that educates and empowers every woman about the importance of regular breast self-examination.Through ancient Kerala Mural Art, 8 steps of self-breast examination brought attention to the issue of breast cancer. Each frame reflected the story of a woman who discovered this condition while performing a self-breast examination, acted on time and defeated cancer. These eight steps have also been depicted in a book format called ‘Chitra Sutra’.The Mural Arts were unveiled on October 31, 2022 at Hotel Rain Tree, Anna Salai, Chennai. This unique initiative was inaugurated by actress Prayaga Martin, in the presence of Ms Tanya Mallavarapu Reddy, Founder Mallavarapu Studio, Dr. Rathna Devi, Consultant, Radiation Oncologist, the Eminent Artist Adarsh, Breast Cancer Experts and the winners.Sharing her thoughts at the launch of ArtCan campaign, Actress Prayaga Martin said, “It gives me great pleasure to be a part of the campaign ‘ArtCan’. Art facilitates communication between patients and healthcare personnel by bringing forth insights from the patients’ views that can be communicated to the world. I appreciate Apollo Cancer Centres’ use of art as a medium to educate and raise awareness about self-breast examination. I’m hoping that this initiative will reach women from all over the country and help them win over breast cancer.”Speaking during the launch of the campaign, Ms Tanya Mallavarapu Reddy, Founder, Mallavarapu Studio, said, “It’s a popular belief that life imitates art and hence, art has the power to transcend languages and cultural barriers. The initiative, ArtCan will create a silent conversation and leave a deep impression on the audience. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer globally and accounts for 25% of all cancer cases in women and reports show that early detection is the key to better outcomes. We believe that the ancient Kerala mural art is a unique medium to create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of breast self-examination”.Speaking on the occasion, Dr, Rathna Devi, Consultant, Radiation Oncologist, said, “In 2022, over 20 lakh cases of breast cancer have been witnessed so far. Apollo Cancer Centres has been a leader in Oncology and has treated multiple complex cancer cases. Understanding and getting tested for cancer at the right time can make a difference in saving a life. This initiative will convey our message to the masses to be cautious of breast cancer and understand the symptoms to get tested at an early stage.”The cancer winner shared her thoughts on the initiative, and said, “Apollo Cancer Centre has been my pillar of strength throughout my journey of winning over cancer. Breast cancer came with stigma and loads of challenges, but the timely medical treatment and tender loving care of Apollo helped me through. As a survivor myself, in line with this initiative of ArtCan, I encourage women all around India to get regularly tested for breast cancer. The early detection not only increases the chances of survival but can be treated in the best way possible without complications.”“It was truly fulfilling to work on this one-of-a-kind project, ArtCan. We are glad that Apollo Cancer Centers is using this powerful medium of storytelling through traditional Indian art to disseminate important medical information. Information that can save thousands of lives. At the same time, this effort is shining a spotlight on India’s proud artistic heritage and our master artists, which really aligns with our mission,” said Adarsh, mural artist.Breast Cancer is a result of multiple factors which include environmental and lifestyle changes. In most cases, it is due to anomalies that arise out of the ageing process, while in 5-10% of the cases, it is genetically inherited. Early detection is the best protection against breast cancer. Regular self-examination and mammography at regular intervals have proven to be most effective in early diagnosis and in achieving better results in treatment and cure. Apollo Hospitals has been a pioneer in introducing comprehensive screening protocols for the early detection of breast cancer.

Apollo Proton Cancer Centre has launched Apollo Breast Cancer Diaries, a support group for breast cancer patie...
Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) has launched a comprehensive health initiative – Apollo Breast Cancer Diaries (ABCD), a support group for breast cancer. The initiative focuses on providing patients with strong psychological support by connecting them with cancer survivors who have travelled similar paths to victory. APCC takes pride in being at the forefront towards the fight against cancer. With its new initiative, APCC continues to make a difference in its mission to provide breast cancer patients with best-in-class support and treatment. The initiative was inaugurated and flagged off by Ms P Geetha Jeevan, Hon’ble Minister of Social Welfare and Women’s Empowerment of Tamil Nadu in the presence of Ms Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group; Dr Sapna Nangia, Senior Consultant – Radiation Oncology, Dr Manjula Rao, Consultant-Breast Onco-plastic Surgeon; and Dr Sujit Kumar Mullapaly, Consultant – Medical Oncologist, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, Chennai; along with Ms Claire Young, Breast Cancer Champion from the UK.For a woman, it is extremely upsetting to receive the news that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Further, the treatment process may lead to fatigue and other side effects such as insomnia, anemia, nausea, pain and change in mood. At times, the patient may also have to deal with the social stigma of being diagnosed with the condition. The constant worry about symptoms, treatment, and mortality can be addressed by licensed psychologists and other mental health professionals with experience in breast cancer treatment. The professionals help women cope with the physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes that come with cancer, as well as the rigorous medical treatments.Commenting on the initiative, Ms P Geetha Jeevan, Hon’ble Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, Government of Tamil Nadu, said, “I am grateful to be a part of this unique and noble initiative, ‘Apollo Breast Cancer Diaries’, by Apollo Proton Cancer Centre is focused on supporting the mental health of breast cancer patients struggling to come to terms with the complications and stigmas associated with it. This initiative will help patients change their perception and strategy to cope with the fight against breast cancer. While fighting cancer, balancing emotions and distress comes at the cost of sacrificing physical & mental health. Apollo’s new initiative will give patients the hope and care they deserve to priorities their health and well-being over everything in their lives.”Ms Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group, said, “Apollo Cancer Centres have always been at the forefront of battling cancer and winning over it. Our initiative, “Apollo Breast Cancer Diaries”, will offer a safe place for people fighting against breast cancer wherein they can share their experiences and emotions with others who are also fighting a similar battle. People in challenging situations benefit from having a good social support system, and Apollo Breast Cancer Diaries will act as a support system for women fighting against breast cancer. The launch of the support group will further strengthen the comprehensive cancer-care that we aim to provide at APCC.”Dr Manjula Rao, Consultant Breast Cancer Specialist & Oncoplastic Surgeon, Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, said, “The support groups provide patients with reinforcements that go above and beyond the regular rigmarole of providing medical treatment. At APCC, we pride ourselves on providing patients with a wholesome 360-degree of cancer care and hope to reinforce this principle with the launch of the Apollo Breast Cancer Diaries (ABCD) initiative. We aim to provide our patients with much-needed emotional, physical, and psychosocial support, not only while going through treatment but also after it.”Apollo Proton Cancer Centre has always been encouraging women to get screened, gain knowledge on cancer and its symptoms, and to watch out for early detection. APCC recently launched a “Screen to Win” campaign in Tamil Nadu to emphasize the importance of regular examination and screening to keep cancer at bay and receive timely treatment for a better outcome.

Apollo Institute of Orthopaedics has successfully completed 370 Robotic Knee Replacements.
Apollo Institute of Orthopedics, a dedicated Centre for joint replacements has successfully complete d 370 robotic Orthopedics procedures over ten months since the launch. The Apollo Institute of Orthopedics began offering cutting-edge minimally invasive robotic surgical techniques and technology since January 2022.India is estimated to emerge as the osteoarthritis (OA) capital of the world with 60 miIIion patients by 2025. Osteoarthritis is a growing global concern and knee arthritis contributes the most to the overall burden. Technological advancements such as robotic arm-assisted technology is revolutionizing knee and hip replacement surgeries enabling higher accuracy and significantly improved patient outcome versus the conventional technique.A robotic knee replacement is just like a traditional knee replacement. The surgeon removes damaged tissue in the knee and replaces it with an artificial joint. The highlight is that robotic knee replacement surgery is done with the assistance of a robotic arm or handheld robotic device. Robotic technology helps the surgeon to achieve accuracy, alignment, and balance during the actual surgery. With the help of a robotic arm, the surgeon will shape the surrounding bone before placing the knee implant and will be able to see the knee and position the implant properly. This enables the surgeon to map out incisions and there will be no instrument slipping or injury to other tissues. This procedure is has revolutionized the knee replacement concept.Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals said “With the robotic arm, reproduction of precise bone cuts for patients can be done, every single time, first on a virtual 3D model and then in the operation theatre. Several studies prove that patients who underwent robotic arm-assisted surgery experienced improved early function, lower post-operative pain, less need for analgesics, faster recovery and higher patient satisfaction compared to manual surgery. The success rate in conventional knee replacement surgery is about 90% to 95% but with robotic-assisted surgeries, the accuracy is cent per cent. Patients recover faster and relief is long-lasting”Ms. Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “At Apollo, we are bringing in cutting edge medical technology, representing the next era of healthcare innovation to treat patients. Robotic Orthopedic procedures have enabled us in helping patients’ recovery from joint and knee ailments with ease. This center has become the busiest center by already completing 370 robotic knee replacement procedures since January 2022. Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy and his team, now holds the distinction of completing the maximum robotic knee replacements in the state of Tamil Nadu.”Apollo Hospitals is excited to bring this world class technology and treatment for patients requiring knee and hip replacement.

Robotic Assisted Pregnancy
Mrs. Razia is a proud mother today! She was referred to Dr. Rooma Sinha, Senior Consultant – Obgyn from NIMS with history of loss of regnancy at 20 weeks in March 2013 and a fibroid in her left lateral wall of uterus that was preventing future successful pregnancy. The fibroid measured 13 x 9.6 cms size as seen in the preoperative MRI below. An open surgery would further compromise the chances of pregnancy. To overcome this, Robotic Myomectomy was done in September 2013 at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad and subsequently she conceived in the month of November 2013. Her antenatal period remained uneventful and she delivered with us at 37 weeks on August 10th 2014 by caesarean section. The uterine scar was intact, with virtual absence of adhesions intra operatively. Both the mother and baby are doing well. Dr. Rooma Sinha, Dr Madhumati and their teamlooked after Mrs. Razia during this period and successfully delivered her.

Apollo Hospitals, OMR organised an event to salute, honour and celebrate stroke survivors.
Apollo Specialty Hospitals OMR under the guidance of Dr. Karthikeyan, Interventional Neurologist, organized a special event to honor and celebrate stroke survivors on 28th October, 2022. The event was presided over by Prof. Shakir Husain Interventional Neurologist & Stroke Specialist, Mr. Senthil, Actor and Dr. Karthikeyan, Interventional Neurologist, Apollo Specialty Hospital OMR. This one-day event was organized to build awareness on stroke to create and to emphasize on the need for early intervention for quality stroke care.More than twenty stroke survivors were honored with awards and mementos for fighting back and recovering seamlessly. Stroke is a major public health problem in India and worldwide. It is one of the leading causes of acquired disability and mortality which results in considerable socioeconomic impact on the patients, their families and the healthcare delivery system. There are two types of stroke including ischemic stroke which is caused due to reduction in blood supply to a part of the brain and Hemorrhagic stroke which is caused due to leakage of blood into a part of the brain.Nearly eighty percentage of stroke is due to blood clot (ischemic) and 20% is due to bleeding (hemorrhagic). Time is the most important factor because, every minute 1,90,000 brain cells are lost during stroke. With the recent advances, when a stroke patient reaches hospital within 24 hours of onset, symptoms can be reverted back with either a clot busting drug or mechanical thrombectomy which is a pin hole procedure, in which a stent retriever is used to remove the clot from the affected blood vessel.A stroke can happen to anyone, at any time and any age. However, the stroke risk increases with age and after the age of 55, the risk doubles for every decade a person is alive. It is no longer a disease of old age, it is more common in younger age groups also . Around 13 million suffer from stroke every year globally and nearly 10,000 people are affected by stroke in Chennai every year. COVID-19 has increased the incidence of stroke after COVID infection as it increases the tendency to form clots in individuals who have high blood sugar, blood pressure and who are obese.Speaking about stroke care Dr. Karthikeyan, Interventional Neurologist, Apollo Specialty Hospital OMR, said, “The emerging stroke treatments are all time dependent. 4.5 hours is the recognized time limit as of now to initiate an intravenous thrombolysis, in an indicated patient. Any sudden neurological symptom should be considered as a stroke warning sign. For example- Sudden vision loss, double vision, dizzy feeling, vertigo, instability/swaying while standing or walking, facial deviation or asymmetry, difficulty in swallowing, coughing while taking food, change in voice (nasal tone, hoarseness), weakness of arm or leg, altered or loss of sensation in a part of the body especially on one side of the face or body, sudden shaking of limbs, difficulty in speaking, difficulty in understanding speech, inability to repeat a sentence when asked to do so, difficulty in doing a coordinated movement, new onset headache or change in the character of chronic headache etc.”Awareness about stroke, its symptoms, the importance of time in stoke management, stroke prevention methods are abysmally low in our community and this event paved the way to create awareness and to hold hands with the stroke survivors who are on the road to recovery.

Breast health still is not a topic of discussion among women .Breast Cancer is a result of multiple factors which include environmental and lifestyle changes. Apollo Hospitals ‘eACCESS’
Hon’ble CM of Telangana Sri K. Chandrashekar Rao launches the state-of-the-art next generation healthcare systemHyderabad, August, 2014: Apollo Hospitals announced the launch of ‘eACCESS’ – a new paradigm in the delivery of critical care services, on the occasion of the 26th Anniversary of Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad on Wednesday at Shilpakala Vedika. This cutting edge technology was formally launched by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Telangana, Sri K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Guest of Honour & Hon’ble Dy. Chief Minister & Health Minister, Telangana Dr. T. Rajaiah; Dr Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group; Ms Sangita Reddy, Jt. Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group; Dr Hari Prasad, CEO – Central Region, Apollo Hospitals Group; Consultant Doctors and staff were present on the occasion. After formally launching the ‘eACCESS’, Sri K. Chandrasekhar Rao said Apollo has immense reputation not in India alone but across the globe, even patients I know off come to Apollo Hyderabad from palces like Delhi, despite Apollo existing in Delhi, such is Apollo Hyderabad’s reputation. Even in Karimanagar, Apollo Reach Hospital has been doing excellent work. Hyderabad is going to have ITIR which will attract more people to the city, even the recent survey has pegged Hyderabad’s population at 1.25 crores making it a bigger city than Bangalore or Chennai, therefore I was asking Dr. Prathap Reddy to scale up his services in the city by building more Apollo Hospitals, to meet the needs of the growing populace. Recently during my visit to Malaysia and Singapore, I promised to frame the world’s best industrial policy, Telangana has several other advantages like a 100 lakh acres land bank, corruption free administration etc. People there said if we can implement even 50% of the promises, the investors from all over the world will flock to Hyderabad. All this would need more hospitals in future, he said. The credit of popularising Hyderabad as the medical tourism hub also largely goes to Apollo Hospitals, it played a great role in this, he added.Dr. T. Rajaiah said, Apollo’s moto of serving people has earned it global accolades. He said the populace in the state especially in agency areas is suffering from contamination and spread of viral diseases, due to lack of health awareness and negligence on the part of public servants and paramedic staff. The staff is focusing on treatment rather than prevention. Due to this 60 to 70% of the people resort to superstitious practices and visit the doctor as a last resort after all those have failed. Therefore the new Government in Telangana and the Hon’ble Chief Minister are introducing a new concept called ‘ Mana Vuru Mana Pranalika’ through which will we will create awareness amongst the public about programs of the Government and reach these Government schemes to the people. Through this we can ensure we can ensure people don’t fall victim to diseases. Here my appeal to Apollo, which constantly updates medical community on latest practices through Continous medical programs, to conduct health awareness programs for people in the villages. Apollo should the responsibility of devicing a program to educate people on disease prevention, he said.According to Dr Prathap Reddy, with eACCESS, Apollo has leapfrogged the ICU care to next-generation delivery. The critical care parameters have significantly improved, including a reduction in the average length of stay, decreased patient mortality and reduced patient morbidity. He said Apollo has always been in the lead to bring within the reach of our people the latest technology available anywhere in the world. Because of the latest technology like 2G, 3G, ‘Geography has become history’, he said. Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad today has every single technology the world has. We will shortly bring the latest robotic spine surgery from Israel. Managing critical care patients in the ICUs requires high levels of dexterity 24×7 from the entire ICU team in a clock-like precision. Continuous monitoring and timely interventions by clinical specialists is of paramount importance. This situation becomes grave considering the severe shortage of intensivists. The solution is to innovate and enable the best of critical care to be available even in the areas where critical care specialists are hard to find, Dr Reddy said. Recently ‘Gallup’ recognised Apollo Hospitals as the ‘best place to work in healthcare’ anywhere in the world, he added. Our emphasis is on keeping people well, he said.Ms Sangita Reddy said, when we at Apollo proclaimed our goal was to reach out to ‘Billion lives’ people wondered how it was possible with our existing hospital network. eAccess is precisely an example of this. Through technology we can multiply our reach many times, in the past it was through Telemedicine, Apollo reached out to remote areas. We will be scaling newer frontiers with the launch of ‘m-Health’ in the near future, she added. The state of the art eACCESS initiative of Apollo Hospitals in collaboration with Philips leverages the capabilities of various technologies including two way audiovisual communication, equipment data interface and novel representation of clinical data in various formats along with the added functionality of trends and alarms to facilitate intensivists to provide proactive quality care to the patients remotely.A highly trained critical care team housed at a Command centre can complement the physical activities that happen within an ICU and ensure that patients are monitored continuously on a 24X7 basis through eACCESS. Any deviations in the conditions of patients can be readily picked up by remote monitoring and actions can be initiated promptly, thereby pre-empting possible hazardous complications. Through the eACCESS command centre one Intensivist will be able to monitor 40-50 patients and help the care team onsite to take relevant actions in real-time to prevent complications. This technology has a current capacity of monitoring 500 beds and can be scaled up to 1000 or more beds depending on the need.eACCESS solution enables the establishment of a “hub-and-spoke” model where the command center is the hub and the peripheral ICUs are the spokes. The central command center has multiple “monitoring stations”. Each monitoring station has a high end computer system connected to an array of high resolution computer monitors. Clinical data (coming in from patient monitors / ventilators/ infusion pumps connected to the patient) of patients admitted to the peripheral ICUs is displayed as a “dashboard view”, enabling continuous monitoring of vital data and lab values. The monitoring intensivists/nurse can also triage into the bedside electronic health record system to either view more details than can be seen on the summary screen, or, to place orders for medications and labs.About Apollo Hospitals GroupIn 1983, Dr Prathap C Reddy, the architect of Indian healthcare, launched the first corporate hospital in India, Apollo Hospitals Chennai.
