This less than 12-hour hospital stay is a great advantage over the conventional joint replacement surgery that requires patients to stay in the hospital for up to a week to ten days for post-operative care, and reduces the cost and risk of hospital-acquired infection. After no relief from treatment at various places outside, she came to Apollo Hospitals, Indore for consultation with Dr Sunil Rajan on 15th September 2020.Dr Sunil Rajan, Orthopedic & Hip, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Apollo Institute of Orthopaedics, Apollo Hospitals, Indore said, “The patient was worked up for her ailment and was diagnosed to have Avascular Necrosis of Ball of both Thigh Bones. She was advised surgery with total replacement of her hip joints. It was decided to replace the left one first as it was more damaged. Due to her fear of getting admitted and operated because of the COVID pandemic, she was offered the option of “Day Care Total Hip Replacement” that would ensure same day discharge and she would not be required to stay in the hospital overnight.”Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Sunil Rajan said, “For day care surgery, complete preoperative preparation is critical for success. A team of a cardiologist and an anesthesiologist did a complete work up of the patient for fitness for anesthesia and surgery prior to admission for surgery. After their clearance, the surgery was planned for 19th November 2020.One day before the surgery, two of the team members went to the patient’s house to assess the facilities with special attention to height of the bed, availability of western closet and grab bar in the bathroom along with checking for any hindrance to movement with walker amongst other aspects to make the home ready for her recovery. The patient’s room and attached washroom was disinfected one day prior to the surgery and closed till she returned from the surgery. The patient and her family or attendants were were trained about strict hand hygiene that they have to follow after surgery. Patient was taught about cleaning to be done before surgery at home.”Describing the surgery, Dr Sunil Rajan said, “The patient was admitted in the morning at 6.30 am and taken to the operation theatre at 8.00 am. DrJayeshJajodia, the anesthesiologist, decided to use general anesthesia with minimal sedation to facilitate the early post-operative mobilization and feeding.Special precautions and medications including adequate painkillers were administered in view of the day care surgery and no use of tubes or drains. The surgery was successfully completed in less than an hour and the patient was shifted to recovery. She was able to take liquids two hours after the surgery and was allowed soft food in the afternoon once her bowel motility returned. The patient was mobilized in the recovery itself with the help of walker. She was discharged from the hospital the same evening at 5.45 PM – in less than 12 hours. One staff nurse and a housekeeping staff was provided to the patient at home for next 48 hours to take good care of her in the post-operative period. Physiotherapy was done as per the routine protocol by physiotherapist visiting the patient at home along with training in performing her activities of daily living.”The patients who are healthy make good candidates for same-day surgery. These include patients younger than 70-80 years without preoperative bleeding disorders, cirrhosis, clinically important cardiac disease or end-stage renal disease. Day care hip and knee replacement has multiple advantages that includes significantly lower cost, reduced infection rate, early mobilisation and recovery, and no need of hospitalization. They placed their utmost trust in the highly experienced Liver transplant team at Apollo Health City, Hyderabad, led by Dr Varma, which clocked an overall success rate of 97% for all liver transplants and 100% for Living Donor liver transplantations, a feat not many hospitals in the world can match.Ketan Ramesh Patel was critically ill for over six months when he came to us, requiring repeated admissions to the hospital. However, in the face of ongoing injury, the liver may suffer damage which is irreversible and irreparable.Liver injury manifests itself as hepatitis which can manifest as jaundice, fever, loss of appetite, swelling in the abdomen and legs, among other manifestations. The most common causes of hepatitis are Alcohol (alcoholic hepatitis), Viral infections (viral hepatitis), and obesity (Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis- NASH). Fortunately, all of these are preventable.Once liver injury progresses beyond a certain extent, it results in a condition called liver cirrhosis, which is irreversible and, hence, called End Stage Liver Disease. Liver Cirrhosis is a progressive disease leading to a very poor quality of life, and cannot be managed with medicines beyond a certain stage. The only way to cure cirrhosis is by changing the diseased liver by Liver Transplantation which can be performed with success rates of more than 90-95%. Without liver transplantation, the outlook for patients with cirrhosis is very poor with almost no hope for long term survival.The steps to prevent End stage liver disease are simple and requires life style modifications and vaccinations against hepatitis viruses. The medical community can contribute by following safe blood bank and hospital practices.End Stage Liver Disease results in a very poor quality of Life and the cure requires major medical interventions. The measures required to prevent this are simple. The hybrid conference witnessed 600 delegates from the research community together to share experiences and discuss topical issuesHyderabad 06 Dec 2023 :  Apollo Research & Innovation (ARI) and Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation (AHERF) – research divisions of Apollo Hospitals Group successfully hosted the “Apollo Clinical Research Conclave”, a two-day hybrid conference on at Apollo Medical College Auditorium, Apollo Health City, Jubilee Hills Hyderabad. The one-of-its-kind Conclave saw the coming together of over 27 stakeholders from across the research community – students, academia, researchers, regulators, pharma, SMOs, CROs, KPOs, hospitals & and research coordinators – onto one common platform.The Clinical Research Conclave saw participation from more than 600 participants (300 from industry 300 from academic institutions including students), with over 35 eminent speakers sharing their experiences. The conference saw pertinent questions being raised to address key issues in research activities essential for the enhancement of healthcare and the well-being of the community. Especially in clinical research, it plays a vital role and the sessions on AI in Clinical Research followed by the panel discussion explicitly provided a complete understanding of the various aspects of AI and how the AI-powered clinical research revolution empowers CR and healthcare progress. The power-packed panel discussion on the role of stakeholders’ perspective of AI in CR gave clarity on the Dos and Don’ts and also highlighted how AI can support and supplement but cannot replace the essential human touch.Patient recruitment is becoming a challenge with the growing disease patterns and the evolving trends in CR and sites have to tackle the situation to ensure patient safety throughout. The presence of a site management or trial office in any healthcare setup is a great boon to ensure effective patient recruitment and ethical conduct of studies. The session on Patient Recruitment followed by the panel discussion on “Innovative strategies to overcome challenges in patient enrolment” provided a clear and explicit perspective on the stakeholder’s views and the significance of the site management office in a clinical trial site. The recommendations were collaboration, resources, training, the use of AI to ease the load, and commitment from the take holders to overcome patient enrolment challenges.

SOCIETY TO AID THE HEARING IMPAIREDIn November of 2004, a group of ENT surgeons, audiologists, and hospital management personnel, united with concerned citizens, to form SAHI. It is an Indian NGO that aims at helping underprivileged children with impaired hearing. SAHI mainly seeks to identify and aid children living in rural areas, with little or no access to modern medical treatment. Since its establishment, SAHI has been addressing this problem by means of conducting camps in remote areas of the state. Children with learning disabilities or hearing loss are given hearing aids by SAHI and those with ear diseases are given free ear surgeries.DEAF FREE TELANGANASAHI will be celebrating the occasion of its 10th anniversary, by initiating an ambitious programme called the ‘Deaf Free Telangana’ project. SAHI is adopting Chevella parliament constituency with the aim of making it a completely deaf free zone in the next two years. The project includes intensive public awareness programmes, regular camps for children below the age of 15, distribution of hearing aids and corrective surgical procedures for the hearing impaired. This programme will be implemented with the help of Apollo Hospitals and Apollo Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.“Every single time you help someone stand up, you are helping humanity rise.”–Dr. Steve MaraboliIndia sees approximately 750,000, i.e., 5% of the total population having hearing problems. About 40,000 of these individuals are hearing impaired from birth, or acquire hearing loss during early childhood. If left untreated in the first 3-5 years of life, these children end up remaining hearing and speech challenged throughout their lives.SAHI team and Apollo are planning to take its first step in creating a deaf free Telangana by conducting its first camp on the 19th of October in Chevella Town. Apollo medical students are joining hands with SAHI as active volunteers at these camps, hoping to create a better hearing society.

Apollo Simulation Centre at Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Vanagaram has signed a MoU with Tamil Nadu Nurse and Midwives Council to implement competency based training through simulation technique for student nurses. Simulation-based training has been made mandatory, based on the new curriculum implemented by the Indian Nursing Council.By entering into this memorandum, Apollo Simulation Centre will become the State Simulation Referral Centre for Training of Trainers for Nursing Leaders in Simulation in preservice education. The Council is keen on implementing Competency Based training for student Nurses.This MoU will facilitate over 1200 Faculties from the 220 Nursing Colleges of Tamil Nadu to undergo a three-day Course at ASC for a one-year period, to become Trainers. The course will enable Trainers in conducting simulation-based training for nursing students to exercise decision making in clinical scenarios, team behaviour and to address human factors in reducing medical errors, along with upskilling.

Apollo Children’s Hospital has launched the Apollo Paediatric Psychiatry Liaison & Education department (APPLE), India’s first Paediatric Liaison Psychiatry Department in Chennai. The department was inaugurated by Ms. B. Priyanka Pankajam IAS., Executive Director Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women in the presence of Dr. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group, Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group and Ms. Gouri G Kishan, popular cine artiste. As a part of the event, Master AR Illamparuthi, under 14 world Youth Chess Champion was honoured and felicitated for his achievements.The unique aspect of the department of ‘APPLE’ – Apollo Paediatric Psychiatry Liaison & Education is the presence of a Liaison Psychiatrist in the entire treatment process of paediatric patients, who would focus on the various mind-related issues while the body of a child heals. This assessment ensures that the treatment plan would be amended to include the mental well-being of the child. The Psychiatrist would thereby be the bridge between the patient and the primary physician.The Liaison Psychiatrist would also counsel the parents and help them deal with their child’s illnesses better. This is especially crucial in long term illnesses and highly critical illnesses which require intensive care etc. Examples of these issues could be children dealing with missed classes / schooling, how parents would need to deal with their official responsibilities, personal commitments along with the treatment of their child etc.The Liaison Psychiatrist would also be training nurses and other staff members to interact with patients with empathy and sensitivity depending on their illness. This would reduce friction during their interaction with the child and their parents and would aid in improving their experience during their hospital stay. This new perspective to healing would benefit patients, parents and staff members thereby accelerating healing and result in managing long term and critical illnesses better.The event also featured cultural and entertainment activities including an act where children were dressed up as doctors, nurses and admin staff and walked around the hospital. The children got a feel of running the hospital on their special day. Children who fought back to life after being critically ill were also part of the event. The CSR activities done by Apollo Children’s Hospitals were also on display during the event.

A patient diagnosed was diagnosed with Acute Budd Chiari syndrome of cryptogenic etiology causing portal hypertension and ascites. The patient was advised TIPS (TRANSJUGULAR INTRAHEPATIC PORTOSYSTEMIC SHUNT) which relieves hepatic venous outflow obstruction and portal hypertension as well as prevents ascites formation and life threatening complications like GI bleed. A 10mm x 10cm PTFE covered metal stent was placed between the middle hepatic vein and right portal vein under fluoroscopic guidance. The procedure was uneventful. Check Doppler that was done 2 days post procedure showed stent thrombosis for which Balloon angioplasty was done and stent was opened. Anticoagulation medications were optimized and the ascites disappeared. Stent patency rates of about 80% at 1 year and good 5-yr survival (74%) without liver transplantation have been reported after TIPS.
