Surgery for Benign Breast Lesions

Not all breast symptoms or lumps are cancerous. In fact, benign breast conditions are common and can arise from hormonal changes, developmental abnormalities, infections, or structural issues within the ducts or lobules. While many of these are harmless and may only require observation, surgery may be recommended when the lesion causes discomfort, has atypical features, or carries a small risk of future complications.

At Apollo Athenaa Women’s Cancer Centre, surgery for benign breast conditions is focused on resolving symptoms, achieving diagnostic clarity, and preserving the natural appearance and function of the breast. Each procedure is tailored to the specific condition, with care taken to ensure optimal cosmetic and clinical outcomes.

How the Procedure Is Performed

The type of surgery depends on the nature and location of the lesion:

Lumpectomy

  • Used to remove a well-defined, non-cancerous lump such as a fibroadenoma or breast cyst.
  • The incision is placed discreetly and the surrounding tissue is preserved.
  • Performed under local or general anesthesia, often as a day-care procedure.

Wide Local Excision

  • Indicated when there is a larger or irregular area of abnormal tissue.
  • A margin of healthy tissue is also removed to ensure completeness.
  • Performed under general anesthesia, with attention to maintaining breast contour.

Microdochectomy

  • Targets a single breast duct causing nipple discharge (especially if bloody or persistent).
  • The affected duct is removed through a small periareolar incision.

Recovery

  • Hospital stay: Most procedures are day-care or short-stay surgeries. Sutures are either dissolvable or removed within a week.
  • Post-operative expectation: Mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising is expected and typically resolves in a few days.
  • Resuming routine: Patients can usually resume light activities within 2–5 days; full recovery takes 2–3 weeks.
  • Follow-up: Final biopsy results are available within 5–7 days.

Key Advantages

  • Symptom relief for pain, nipple discharge, or anxiety caused by a lump.
  • Definitive diagnosis when imaging or biopsy results are inconclusive.
  • Minimally invasive, with excellent cosmetic results.
  • Preservation of breast tissue and shape, especially in younger women.
  • Low complication risk, with quick return to routine activities.

Continuum of Care

At Apollo Athenaa, even surgeries for benign conditions are integrated into a thoughtful, multidisciplinary care pathway. Patients benefit from:

  • Detailed imaging and biopsy review, to confirm the need for surgery.
  • Pre-surgical counselling, outlining options and what to expect.
  • Careful surgical planning, with a focus on aesthetics and comfort.
  • Post-operative support, including wound care, scar management, and emotional reassurance.
  • Pathology follow-up, guiding further monitoring or treatment if needed.
