Strength Support Survival

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a transformative milestone in the recovery journey of many women undergoing mastectomy. Beyond restoring physical appearance, it plays a crucial role in emotional healing, body image, and overall quality of life. At Apollo Athenaa Women’s Cancer Centre, we understand the deeply personal nature of this journey and are committed to offering advanced, personalised care that blends surgical precision with aesthetic excellence.

Autologous Reconstruction

Our centre offers both Immediate Reconstruction — performed at the time of mastectomy — and Delayed Reconstruction, undertaken after cancer treatment. We prioritise autologous reconstruction, particularly the DIEP Flap technique (using the patient’s own abdominal tissue), the TUG Flap technique (using the patient’s own inner thigh tissue), or Latissimus Dorsi Flap technique (using the patient’s own upper back tissue) to create the breast tissue.

Implant-Based Reconstruction

For women who prefer a less invasive option or are not candidates for flap surgery, we also offer implant-based reconstruction. This may be done in a single stage or as a two-step process using a temporary tissue expander followed by permanent implant placement.

Symmetrisation and Breast Reduction

To achieve a natural, balanced appearance, many women benefit from procedures on the opposite breast, especially if there is a significant difference in size, shape, or position. Our surgeons perform:

  • Contralateral Symmetrisation, which may include breast lift, reduction, or augmentation to match the reconstructed breast

  • Breast Reduction, which is also performed independently for women with large, heavy breasts, to relieve discomfort and improve body balance, and address skin problems such as rashes, fungal infections etc

These procedures are often performed during the second stage of reconstruction (along with nipple reconstruction and tattooing) and contribute greatly to patient satisfaction and final aesthetic outcomes. These can be performed at the same time- we usually prefer in the same sitting to avoid two surgeries.

Lymphedema Management

Lymphedema often occurs after cancer surgery when there is disruption or damage to the lymphatic system (lymph nodes), which normally helps drain lymph fluid from tissues. It’s a common complication after surgeries involving lymph node removal or radiation therapy, especially in breast, gynaecological, or pelvic cancers. It can lead to swelling, discomfort, and long-term mobility issues.
