Robotic-Assisted Mastectomy
Robotic-assisted mastectomy is a state-of-the-art surgical technique that combines the precision of minimally invasive surgery with advanced robotic technology. It allows the removal of breast tissue through small, well-concealed incisions, offering improved visualisation for the surgeon and excellent cosmetic results for the patient.
At Apollo Athenaa Women’s Cancer Centre, robotic-assisted mastectomy is offered in selected cases of early-stage breast cancer and risk-reducing surgery. This approach is ideal for women seeking minimal visible scarring, preserved anatomy, and seamless integration with immediate breast reconstruction.
How the Procedure Is Performed
- The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
- A small incision is made in the armpit or under the breast is made to conceal scars and access the surgical field.
- Using the robotic surgical system, instruments are inserted through keyhole ports.
- Using 3D visualisation and precise robotic arms, the surgeon dissects and removes the entire breast tissue, preserves the skin envelope, and if suitable, the nipple–areola complex.
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary dissection may be performed through the same incision.
- Immediate breast reconstruction (implant or flap-based) is usually done in the same sitting.
- The cuts are closed meticulously to ensure minimal scarring.
- Total surgery time typically ranges from 4 to 6 hours, depending on reconstruction complexity.
Recovery
- Hospital stay: Most patients are discharged within 1–2 days. Drains may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation and are usually removed within 5–10 days.
- Pain management: Post-operative pain is typically mild due to the minimally invasive approach.
- Resuming routine: Light activity can resume within a week; full recovery typically takes 3–4 weeks.
- Follow-up care: Follow-ups include wound checks, drain monitoring, and physical therapy support.
Key Advantages
- Minimal scarring, with incisions in the axilla or under the breast fold
- Improved surgical precision, aided by 3D visualisation and robotic dexterity
- Excellent cosmetic outcomes, particularly when paired with nipple- or skin-sparing mastectomy
- Lower postoperative discomfort and quicker return to daily activities
- Preserves chest wall integrity, supporting better reconstruction and body image
