Musculoskeletal Cancer Care Precision, Treatment.
Restoring Movement & Life.
Musculoskeletal cancers affect the bones, muscles, and connective tissues that support movement and strength. When diagnosed early and treated with expertise, many of these cancers can be effectively managed. With advances in limb-sparing surgery, precision imaging, targeted therapies, and reconstructive techniques, treatment at Athenaa focuses on curing disease, and preserving mobility and quality of life.
Types Of Musculoskeletal Cancers
Musculoskeletal cancers arise in bones, muscles, cartilage, fat, and other connective tissues. They are classified based on the tissue from which they originate.
  • Primary Bone Cancers (Originate in bone)
  • Soft Tissue Cancers (Soft Tissue Sarcomas)
  • Metastatic Bone Cancer
  • Benign Bone Tumors (Non-cancerous)

  • Osteosarcoma: The most common primary bone cancer, usually affecting children and teenagers, often around the knee or shoulder.
  • Ewing Sarcoma: A highly aggressive tumor seen in children and young adults, commonly involving the pelvis, ribs, or long bones. ·
  • Chondrosarcoma: A cancer of cartilage-forming cells, typically occurring in adults and often affecting the pelvis, hip, or shoulder. ·
  • Multiple Myeloma: A cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow that weakens bones and can lead to fractures or widespread bone pain.

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma: A cancer arising from skeletal muscle cells, most commonly seen in children and adolescents.
  • Liposarcoma: A malignant tumor of fat tissue that usually develops in deep soft tissues like the thigh or abdomen.
  • Leiomyosarcoma: Originates from smooth muscle cells, often affecting blood vessels or internal organs.
  • Synovial Sarcoma: Typically occurs near joints in young adults and may present as a slow-growing but aggressive mass.
  • Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor: A rare cancer arising from the protective lining of nerves, sometimes associated with genetic conditions

types-of-musculoskeletal-cancers
  • Most common type of bone involvement in cancer, occurring when tumors from other organs spread to the bones.
  • These cancers do not originate in bone but travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to the skeleton.
  • Common primary sources include breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, and thyroid cancer.

  • Osteochondroma: The most common benign bone tumor, usually seen as a painless bony growth near joints, especially around the knee or shoulder.
  • Enchondroma: A cartilage-based tumor that develops inside the bone, often found incidentally in the hands and feet.
  • Osteoid Osteoma: A small but painful tumor, classically causing night pain that improves with pain relief medications.
  • Giant Cell Tumor: A locally aggressive tumor that typically occurs near the ends of long bones and may cause swelling or joint pain.
  • Fibrous Dysplasia: A developmental condition where normal bone is replaced with fibrous tissue, leading to deformity or fractures in some cases.
  • Bone cysts: Non-cancerous fluid filled cavities found inside bones.

World-Class Diagnostics
& Early Detection

Early and accurate diagnosis is critical in the treatment of musculoskeletal cancers. Advanced imaging and specialized pathology help determine the exact type, location, and stage of the tumor.

Diagnostics

At Athenaa, our advanced diagnostic capabilities ensure precise evaluation and treatment planning:

  • X-rays for initial assessment of bone lesions and structural abnormalities
  • High-resolution MRI for soft tissue and bone tumor assessment
  • CT scans for bone structure evaluation and surgical planning
  • PET-CT scans to detect cancer spread and guide treatment strategy
  • Bone scans for identifying skeletal involvement
  • Ultrasound for evaluation of superficial soft tissue tumors
  • Image-guided core needle biopsy for accurate tumor diagnosis
  • Advanced histopathology and immunohistochemistry for tumor characterization
  • Molecular testing and genetic profiling for sarcoma subtyping

All diagnostic procedures are interpreted by experienced musculoskeletal radiologists and pathologists to ensure accurate diagnosis.

Staging of Musculoskeletal Cancers

Musculoskeletal cancer staging helps determine the extent of disease and guides treatment decisions. Staging is based on tumor size, tumor grade, lymph node involvement, and spread to distant organs.

Stage I

image

Low-grade tumor confined to the bone or soft tissue

Stage II

image

High-grade tumor but still localized to the original site

Stage III

image

Tumor involving multiple areas within the same bone or region

Stage IV

Cancer has spread to distant organs such as the lungs or other bones

Our Approach To Treatment

We blend advanced technology with personalized care, ensuring every woman's treatment is precise, compassionate, and supportive.

Musculoskeletal / Orthopedic Oncology

Surgery is the cornerstone of treatment for many musculoskeletal cancers. Modern techniques aim to remove tumors completely while preserving limb function and mobility whenever possible.

  • Limb-sparing tumor surgery
  • Wide tumor excision for soft tissue cancers
  • En bloc tumor resection with oncologic safety margins
  • Joint-preserving surgical techniques
  • Minimally invasive tumor resection
  • Amputation for advanced disease
  • Curettage of benign bone tumors
  • CT-guided radiofrequency ablation

Surgical oncologists at Apollo Athenaa use advanced techniques to remove cancer while restoring movement and stability.

Orthopedic Reconstructive Surgery

Restoring movement and structural stability are critical parts of musculoskeletal cancer care, and our orthopedic oncology team specializes in reconstructive techniques required for patients with bone and soft tissue tumors.

  • Endoprosthetic reconstruction (implant-based) with modular tumor prostheses and custom tumor implants
  • Joint reconstruction after tumor resection
  • Autograft reconstruction using bone grafts (patient’s own bone)
  • Allograft reconstruction using bone grafts (donor bone)
  • Reconstruction with recycled tumor bone
  • Microvascular soft tissue reconstruction
  • Microvascular autologous bone grafts
  • Revision and salvage of failed limb reconstructions
  • Muscle, tendon and nerve reconstruction
  • Prophylactic/therapeutic fixation of pathological fractures (in metastatic bone disease)

At Apollo Athenaa, our aim is to help patients regain mobility, independence, and quality of life following cancer treatment.

Medical Oncology

At Athenaa, cancer treatment is never one-size-fits-all. Our medical oncology team designs therapies based on tumor biology, genetics, and patient needs.

  • Chemotherapy for sarcomas and high-grade bone cancers
  • Neoadjuvant therapy before surgery to shrink tumors
  • Adjuvant therapy after surgery to reduce recurrence risk
  • Targeted therapies for specific sarcoma subtypes
  • Immunotherapy for advanced or metastatic disease
  • Precision oncology using molecular profiling
  • Palliative therapies to control symptoms and maintain quality of life

At Apollo Athenaa, our chemotherapy day-care facilities provide safe, comfortable treatment under expert supervision.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy plays an important role in the treatment of certain musculoskeletal tumors, particularly soft tissue sarcomas.

  • External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT)
  • Brachytherapy for soft tissue cancers
  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) for precise targeting
  • Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT)
  • Proton therapy for tumors located near critical organs or the spine
  • Pre-operative radiation to shrink tumors
  • Post-operative radiation to reduce recurrence risk
  • Palliative radiation therapy for metastatic bone tumors

These advanced technologies allow high-dose treatment to tumors while protecting surrounding muscles, nerves, and vital organs.
