Apollo Hospitals Guwahati Upgrades Cath Lab with Philips Azurion 7M20 System

Advanced imaging and precision interventions strengthen heart care in Northeast India. This is because Apollo Hospitals Guwahati has upgraded its catheterization laboratory (cath lab) with the Philips Azurion 7M20 image-guided therapy system, enhancing its capabilities in advanced cardiac imaging and interventional cardiology. The platform integrates interventional digital X-ray and angiography technology to improve precision, efficiency, and safety during cardiac procedures.  The upgrade was announced at a press meet attended by senior cardiology specialists, including Dr. Rituparna Baruah, Dr. Dibya Jyoti Dutta, Dr. Chandra Kumar Das, and Dr. Chandra Prakash Thakur. The system features advanced 3D imaging and dynamic coronary roadmap technology, enabling clinicians to visualise cardiac structures in real time with greater clarity and accuracy. It is also designed to reduce radiation exposure by up to 60 per cent, supporting safer procedural environments. The enhanced cath lab supports a wide range of minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty, device implantation, and electrophysiology studies, while strengthening the hospital’s capacity to manage complex cardiac cases and higher procedural volumes. It is expected to enable reduced procedural risks, faster recovery, and improved diagnostic accuracy. Hospital officials noted that the cardiology department performed over 1,500 procedures in the past year, with a mortality rate below 2 per cent. The upgrade is set to further expand access to specialised cardiac care across Northeast India.

Apollo Hospitals Chennai Achieves Breakthrough with BASILICA-Assisted TAVI, Safeguarding High-Risk Heart Patient

Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has successfully treated a 67-year-old high-risk heart patient using an advanced, minimally invasive procedure called BASILICA-assisted TAVI. This specialised technique is designed to prevent blockage of the coronary artery during valve replacement. This milestone highlights the growing role of advanced transcatheter therapies in managing complex structural heart disease, particularly in patients who are not suitable candidates for repeat open-heart surgery.  The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Sengottuvelu G, Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Clinical Lead of Structural Heart Interventions at Apollo Hospitals Chennai. This approach offers a minimally invasive alternative for redo valve replacement cases, where conventional surgery carries significant risk. The patient had a history of diabetes, coronary artery disease with prior stenting, and aortic valve replacement surgery in 2017. Degeneration of the previous valve led to recurrent aortic stenosis (narrowing) and regurgitation (leakage), both of which can affect blood flow. Before the procedure, a scan revealed a high risk of blockage (an uncommon but serious complication of TAVI), associated with mortality rates of up to 40–50% when it occurs. To reduce this risk, doctors used a combination of TAVI (a catheter-based valve replacement procedure) and the BASILICA technique. In simple terms, BASILICA involves carefully splitting a part of the old valve using controlled energy so that it does not block blood flow to the heart during the new valve placement.   Dr. Sengottuvelu G noted, “This case highlights the evolving capabilities of transcatheter therapies in managing highly complex structural heart disease. BASILICA is a technically demanding procedure, and its successful execution reflects the expertise and coordination of our team.” Dr. C S Muthukumaran, Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals Chennai, added, “Performing the first BASILICA procedure in the Apollo Group is a proud moment. It reinforces our commitment to bringing cutting-edge, life-saving technologies to patients in India.” After the procedure, the patient showed good recovery, with improved blood flow, stable rhythm, and no evidence of heart blockage, and was discharged in stable condition. With international success rates exceeding 90% in selected cases, BASILICA remains a highly specialised procedure, underscoring Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to delivering evidence-based, patient-centric cardiac care.

Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group, felicitated renowned heart surgeon Dr. Vijay Dikshit f...
Renowned Heart Surgeon and Chief Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon of Apollo Health City , Hyderabad, Dr. Vijay Dikshit, was felicitated by Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group and eminent citizens and doctors from the city, for accomplishing a rare distinction of performing over 20,000 cardiac surgeries. Dr Dikshit, who performed his first cardiac surgery way back in 1991, reached the milestone in March, 2016. This is the largest experience of Open Heart Surgery that any surgeon has had in India. Dr. Vijay Dikshit, who originally hails from Lucknow and has since made Hyderabad his home – in his illustrious career of over twenty five years, most of which has been at Apollo Hospitals, has accomplished several landmarks. He holds the unique record of performing 362 consecutive Coronary Bypass Surgeries without any mortality or serious complication, between 1991 to 1993, which illustrated the potential he had in him to become one of the most dexterous heart surgeons in this part of the world and globally. Dr. Dikshit performed a delicate and complex heart surgery successfully on a two day old baby born with congenital heart disease, in his initial years in the profession, a rare accomplishment in those days and even today. Only a handful of cardiac surgeons have tread this distance in the annals of cardiothoracic surgery, world over, therefore this accomplishment of Dr. Vijay Dikshit is highly commendable, said, Dr. Prathap C Reddy. Dr. Dikshit was instrumental in pioneering several advanced techniques of Coronary Bypass surgery in India, like routine use of Internal Mammary Artery Graft, Coronary Endarterectomies, Bypass Surgery on beating hearts, Minimal Invasive Coronary Bypass Surgeries and use of Radial Artery for bypass graft and other arterial conduits for Bypass surgeries. He operated on many infants for complex congenital defects using the technique of Profound Hypothermia with Circulatory Arrest. Dr. Dikshit is one among the first Cardiac Surgeons to have started doing Redo Coronary Bypass Surgeries (Repeat Bypass surgery) in India, which was considered to be complicated, requiring treatment abroad. Dr. Dikshit’s spree of successful work continued with him performing the first operation of Thoracoscopic Closure of Patient Ductus Arteriosus, on a six year old male child in 1996. He was one of the first to use and now has the largest experience in using Stentless Bioprosthetic Valve Replacement Surgery for Aortic Valve disease in India, a state of the art Tissue Heart Valve not yet commonly used in India. Dr. Dikshit performed the first Heart Transplant in November 2013 under Jeevandan Scheme of Government of Andhra Pradesh. He has the experience of the highest number of Mitral Valve Replacement Operation with Complete Chordal Preservation & Artificial Chordal Reconstruction, one of the latest techniques of Mitral Valve surgery. Dr. Dikshit has performed over 8,500 CABGs with Beating Heart Technique. He is a recipient of the prestigious FIE National Award in 1994 from Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Union Finance Minister, for excellence in Medical Sciences. Rama Krishna Mission recognized and honored him for dedicated service to humanity. Medtronic Inc., USA felicitated him for performing 5000 Open Heart Surgeries in the year 2000. But Dr. Vijay Dikshit, who is extremely down to earth and humble says, “the love and bonding I get from my patients is overwhelming, and nothing can beat that. The cheer I see in their faces is what keeps me going”. Dr. Dikshit worked and trained in several top notch and globally reputed institutions like Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesotta; The Kaiser Permanente Hospital , Los Angeles; Abbots North Western Hospital, Minneapolis Heart Institute, Minneapolis ; Dr. Dudley Johnson’s Unit at Milwaukee; Royal Children Hospital, Melbourne, Australia with Dr. Roger B Mee, a renowned authority on Paediatric Cardiac Surgery. Apollo Hospitals joins hands with William Osler Health System for coordination of care and collaborative rese...
Apollo Hospitals and William Osler Health System (Osler) signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalizing a unique partnership between the two organizations. The agreement, signed in Delhi recently by Dr. Anupam Sibal, Senior Consultant and Group Medical Director of Apollo Hospitals and Dr. Naveed Mohammad, VP Medical Affairs, William Osler Health System and Lead Physician of Osler’s Global Health Program, brings together two leading health care organizations in efforts to improve health outcomes across the world. Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited and Apollo Hospitals Senior Leadership team members across India were present via video conference as well. The partnership focuses on two unique areas including research and continuity of patient care. Through the research collaboration, scientists at the two organizations will begin by identifying areas of cooperation, collaboration and innovation, particularly around the range of diseases like Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer, which are highly prevalent among the population in regions served by both Osler and Apollo Hospitals. A recent assessment report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that the diabetic population in India is rising constantly and is projected to reach 101.2 million in the next 15 years. “Every year, nearly 36 million lives are lost to lifestyle diseases and more than 60 per cent of the population in India bears the brunt of chronic diseases. It is estimated that the incidence of chronic disease will cost India $6.2 trillion (USD) by the year 2030, adding to the already-existing financial burden, calling out for a paradigm shift in disease management”, said Mr. Rahul Reddy, SVP Strategic Relationships & New Initiatives, Apollo Hospitals Group. The organizations will also initiate a pilot project to enhance the continuity of care for patients with complex needs traveling between India and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Canada for extended periods of time. As part of the pilot, Apollo and Osler physicians will identify patients and provide them with an option of going to Apollo and Osler hospitals when in the other country for chronic, acute or emergency care. In consultation with identified patients, medical records – including physician notes, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging tests and medication records – will be securely shared to ensure medical information is available to clinicians delivering care. In addition, consults including virtual grand rounds will be arranged between hospital clinical teams to enhance patient care. “We share a vision of improving life for the communities we serve and by promoting management of an individual’s health and wellness, said Dr. Mohammad“. The two organizations also share a common interest in providing coordinated, high-quality health care for their patients, whether they are residents or visitors. This pilot gives us an unprecedented opportunity to better understand how we can coordinate the continuity of care for these patients and dramatically improve their health outcomes – contributing significantly to their increased health and wellness and making a positive difference to the health system as a whole.” This agreement between Osler and Apollo Hospitals is viewed to be significantly beneficial in view of the rising burden of chronic disease in both countries, and will enable transparent and seamless health care delivery in both countries. With the evolution of molecular diagnostics and genetics, it’s time to leverage technology to enable precision diagnosis and commensurate treatment giving the patient the best chance to fight cancer. This in turn shall enable us to realize our long standing vision of delivering better clinical outcomes from bench to bedside. This alliance is further validation of Apollo Hospital’s commitment to research driven health care.” Also speaking on the occasion, Rajan Datar, Managing Director, Datar Genetics, said “It is inevitable that genetics will be the main stay of all aspects of the war on cancer. India will lead this intellectual revolution and Datar Genetics is determined to make it successful. The collaboration with Apollo Hospitals marks the fundamental shift from a ‘West-facing’ and ‘West-dependent’ perspective in high technology in healthcare to a self-confident research initiative in India.” The strategic partnership is the first of its kind in India and will pave the way for rapid integration of molecular and genetic analysis as standard treatment options in cancer treatment for better outcomes and quality of life for patients as well as create an India centric model for high technology relevant for the world.

Apollo Group of Hospitals has always persevered to address the challenges faced by the nation. Furthermore, to accelerate positive change, Apollo Hospitals has actively partnered with industry bodies and worked closely with the national administrators to influence change. One such industry body that Apollo Hospitals has actively supported is the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). CII”s primary goal is to develop Indian industry and to ensure that government and society as a whole, understand both the needs of industry and its contribution to the nation’s wellbeing. Over the years, leaders at the helm of CII have been able to anticipate changes in the economic environment; identify emerging challenges and evolve action-solutions for development. In addition to serving Apollo Hospitals, our Executive Vice Chairperson, Ms. Shobana Kamineni has been working closely with the Confederation of Indian Industry for several years. In a landmark development, she has now been appointed as the President Designate of CII, and next year, she will be the first ever woman president of CII since its inception. In yet another effort towards the vision of empowering people with credible and quality Healthcare information, Apollo Hospitals has worked with Google to add health information to Google’s Knowledge Graph in India. This new feature aims to give people access to health information quickly and easily. The health card is a highly standardized and reader friendly format of information that gets presented on the Google search engine. It aims to help consumers and people’s access and appreciate information quickly and easily. Henceforth, when a user asks Google about common health conditions, he/she will start getting relevant medical facts right up front and will be able to see typical symptoms, as well as details on how common the condition is—whether it’s critical, if it’s contagious, what ages it affects, and more. For some conditions, high-quality illustrations from licensed medical illustrators are also available. All the medical information that gets presented in the cards is reviewed and certified by the Specialists of Apollo Hospitals. The focus is to empower people with accurate, appropriate and easy to understand information so as to support them and provide a framework from which they can have a better conversation with their doctor or dive deeper on the web. Since the advent of internet, and access to a variety of health related information, consumers have been attempting to find answers and classifications to many of their health concerns from the internet. To empower today’s connected patient, consultants from Apollo Hospitals across locations have come together for this initiative and support it with their inputs to validate medical information on web on health concerns ranging from a diaper rash to a heart attack. Speaking on the launch, Ms Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited said, “Apollo Hospitals has always been committed to providing the digital dividend to all Indians. We are very proud to have associated with Google on this initiative. With India being on the verge of a major digital revolution, internet has become the most powerful tool and is the apt platform to connect with our consumers. At Apollo Hospitals, we have always used technology to its optimum use and for the benefit of patients. With the launch of this Project, we aim to take this initiative to greater heights and provide quality healthcare information which can be accessed by a billion Indian.” “The Apollo Hospitals Group has always been a pioneer in amalgamating Information, Communication and Technology with Healthcare Services”, said Dr. Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited. “Our joint effort with Google to add health information to the Knowledge Graph in India is yet another step in this direction.
