    Advanced imaging and precision interventions strengthen heart care in Northeast India. This is because Apollo Hospitals Guwahati has upgraded its catheterization laboratory (cath lab) with the Philips Azurion 7M20 image-guided therapy system, enhancing its capabilities in advanced cardiac imaging and interventional cardiology. The platform integrates interventional digital X-ray and angiography technology to improve precision, efficiency, and safety during cardiac procedures.  The upgrade was announced at a press meet attended by senior cardiology specialists, including Dr. Rituparna Baruah, Dr. Dibya Jyoti Dutta, Dr. Chandra Kumar Das, and Dr. Chandra Prakash Thakur. The system features advanced 3D imaging and dynamic coronary roadmap technology, enabling clinicians to visualise cardiac structures in real time with greater clarity and accuracy. It is also designed to reduce radiation exposure by up to 60 per cent, supporting safer procedural environments. The enhanced cath lab supports a wide range of minimally invasive procedures such as angioplasty, device implantation, and electrophysiology studies, while strengthening the hospital’s capacity to manage complex cardiac cases and higher procedural volumes. It is expected to enable reduced procedural risks, faster recovery, and improved diagnostic accuracy. Hospital officials noted that the cardiology department performed over 1,500 procedures in the past year, with a mortality rate below 2 per cent. The upgrade is set to further expand access to specialised cardiac care across Northeast India.

    Apollo Hospitals Chennai Achieves Breakthrough with BASILICA-Assisted TAVI, Safeguarding High-Risk Heart Patient

    Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, has successfully treated a 67-year-old high-risk heart patient using an advanced, minimally invasive procedure called BASILICA-assisted TAVI. This specialised technique is designed to prevent blockage of the coronary artery during valve replacement. This milestone highlights the growing role of advanced transcatheter therapies in managing complex structural heart disease, particularly in patients who are not suitable candidates for repeat open-heart surgery.  The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Sengottuvelu G, Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Clinical Lead of Structural Heart Interventions at Apollo Hospitals Chennai. This approach offers a minimally invasive alternative for redo valve replacement cases, where conventional surgery carries significant risk. The patient had a history of diabetes, coronary artery disease with prior stenting, and aortic valve replacement surgery in 2017. Degeneration of the previous valve led to recurrent aortic stenosis (narrowing) and regurgitation (leakage), both of which can affect blood flow. Before the procedure, a scan revealed a high risk of blockage (an uncommon but serious complication of TAVI), associated with mortality rates of up to 40–50% when it occurs. To reduce this risk, doctors used a combination of TAVI (a catheter-based valve replacement procedure) and the BASILICA technique. In simple terms, BASILICA involves carefully splitting a part of the old valve using controlled energy so that it does not block blood flow to the heart during the new valve placement.   Dr. Sengottuvelu G noted, “This case highlights the evolving capabilities of transcatheter therapies in managing highly complex structural heart disease. BASILICA is a technically demanding procedure, and its successful execution reflects the expertise and coordination of our team.” Dr. C S Muthukumaran, Interventional Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals Chennai, added, “Performing the first BASILICA procedure in the Apollo Group is a proud moment. It reinforces our commitment to bringing cutting-edge, life-saving technologies to patients in India.” After the procedure, the patient showed good recovery, with improved blood flow, stable rhythm, and no evidence of heart blockage, and was discharged in stable condition.     Team from Apollo Chennai Uses Robotic Technology to Treat Severe Spine Deformity in South American Teen

    When a 15-year-old girl from Suriname, South America, developed adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine with no clearly identifiable cause, her family began an urgent global search for specialised care. With limited treatment options in their home country, they reached out to multiple international centres. Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Teynampet, Chennai, responded promptly, enabling a swift consultation and guiding the family’s decision to travel to India for treatment. Dr. Sajan K. Hegde, Director, Spine Surgery, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, and the team, with the 15-year-old patient- Sedi Van Genderen, and her mother - Iris. On arrival, the patient was diagnosed with a severe and rapidly progressing spinal deformity that was affecting posture, mobility, and long-term health. Under the leadership of Dr. Sajan K. Hegde, Director – Spine Surgery, the multidisciplinary team adopted a staged, technology-driven approach. The initial phase involved halo gravity traction over three weeks to gradually improve spinal alignment. This was followed by a two-stage surgical intervention supported by robotic navigation and intraoperative neuromonitoring. In the first surgery, screws were placed into the spine using robotic guidance to ensure high precision. In the second surgery, damaged discs were removed and the spine was stabilised by fusing certain bones together. Finally, the spine was carefully straightened and fixed in place across multiple levels. Robotic systems helped doctors see the spine in real time and place implants with great accuracy, improving outcomes and reducing risks. Following the surgeries, the patient’s spinal curvature was corrected by about 75%, said Dr. Appaji Krishnan, Senior Consultant – Spine Surgery, who emphasised that the outcome was the result of a coordinated multidisciplinary team effort. The patient is recovering well, underscoring the impact of precision-led technologies and expert collaboration in managing complex spinal deformities, and reinforcing Chennai’s position as a trusted global destination for advanced spine care.

    Milestone highlights the shift toward real-time, personalised neuromodulation in Parkinson’s treatmentAnnounced on the occasion of World Parkinson’s Day, underscoring the need for awareness and timely access to advanced therapiesCHENNAI, India – 11 April 2026: Apollo Hospitals, Chennai announces a major milestone in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in India, the country’s first clinical activation of Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation (aDBS). The procedure was carried out on 2 March 2026 by Dr. Vijayashankar Paramanandam, Dr. Arvind Sukumaran, and their team. The programme is led by clinicians with advanced international fellowship training in movement disorders neurology and functional neurosurgery.  A recent British Medical Journal study underscores the rising burden of Parkinson’s disease in India, with an estimated 2.8 million people expected to be living with the condition by 2050 (range 2.3–3.5 million), second only to China and accounting for nearly one-tenth of global cases. South Asia is projected to contribute nearly 6.8 million cases overall. Globally, the Parkinson’s population is expected to reach 25.2 million—up over 112% from 2021 levels—with India alone projected to see a 160–180% increase. Current global prevalence stands at 267 cases per one lakh people. The milestone builds on the hospital’s established Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) programme, developed through sustained experience in movement disorders and functional neurosurgery. This follows an initial period of clinical follow-up to assess the patient’s response to the treatment. Conventional DBS has transformed care for appropriately selected Parkinson’s patients by delivering continuous electrical stimulation to targeted areas of the brain. Adaptive DBS fine tunes it by introducing a more responsive approach, adjusting stimulation in real time based on the patient’s own brain signals. This approach is supported by sensing-enabled neurostimulation systems, including those developed by Medtronic, allowing therapy to better align with fluctuations in symptoms across the day. Adaptive DBS is an important advance in Parkinson’s therapy,” said Dr. Vijayashankar Paramanandam, Senior Consultant Neurologist & Movement Disorders and DBS Specialist, Apollo Hospitals, Greams Lane-Chennai. “Adaptive DBS represents the next major evolution from conventional, continuous DBS therapy. The complex procedure was led by Dr Vanita Arora, Clinical Lead – Cardiac Electrophysiology, and her team, offering a safe and minimally invasive solution for patients with challenging cardiac conditions.  Dr Vanita Arora (centre) with the cardiac electrophysiology team after performing India’s first leadless pacemaker implantation through a metallic prosthetic tricuspid valve. The patient, a 65-year-old with a long history of cardiac illness, had previously undergone tricuspid valve replacement with a mechanical valve prosthesis. When he later developed symptomatic sinus node dysfunction and atrioventricular conduction disease, a permanent pacemaker was required to restore a stable heart rhythm. However, conventional pacemaker implantation was not feasible, as passing pacing leads through a mechanical tricuspid valve could damage the prosthesis and compromise valve function. To address this challenge, the team implanted a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker using a catheter-based approach through a vein in the leg. Unlike traditional pacemakers, leadless systems are compact, self-contained devices placed directly within the heart, eliminating the need for pacing leads and surgical pockets. This approach reduces the risk of infection, device-related complications, and interference with prosthetic valves. The procedure was carefully planned using advanced cardiac mapping and precise device positioning to restore heart rhythm while preserving the function of the prosthetic valve. The patient recovered well and was discharged in stable condition. This landmark intervention highlights the expanding role of leadless pacing technologies in managing complex cardiac rhythm disorders and reinforces Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to advancing innovation in cardiovascular care.

    Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals marked a proud moment as Dr Arun Prasad, Senior Consultant – Surgical Gastroenterology, was honoured at the UK House of Lords during the India–UK Achievers Honours 2026. Dr Prasad received the Science and Innovation Award at a parliamentary reception held at the UK Parliament, recognising his contributions to advancing minimal access gastrointestinal, bariatric, thoracic, and robotic surgery in India. The recognition celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to science, innovation, and cross-border collaboration between India and the United Kingdom. The honour formed part of a three-day India–UK engagement programme, which also hosted the India–UK Education Conference. The event brought together over 700 leaders representing more than 350 universities, companies, and sector bodies, making it the largest international education convening in the UK focused on strengthening India–UK partnerships. With more than three decades of clinical experience, Dr Prasad has played a pioneering role in advancing minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques, enabling greater precision, reduced surgical trauma, and faster recovery for patients. In addition to his clinical work, he has contributed extensively to surgical education and international knowledge exchange, strengthening global collaboration in modern surgical care.  Reflecting on the honour, Dr Prasad said, “To be announced as the winner in this category among global nominees is deeply humbling.” He also expressed his appreciation to the organisers, stating, “Grateful to Lord Karan Bilimoria, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and Deputy Lieutenant (DL), Lord Uday Nagaraju, Member of the UK House of Lords, and the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU UK) for this distinguished recognition.” The recognition highlights the growing global impact of Indian clinicians and reinforces Apollo Hospitals’ commitment to fostering clinical excellence, innovation, and internationally recognised expertise in advanced surgical care.
