Bone Density

Overview:

Bone density or bone mineral density is a test used to measure the amount of calcium and other minerals present in the bone. It helps to identify conditions such as osteoporosis (fragile bones) that can lead to fractures.

When it’s done:

This test is performed to:

  • Evaluate any bone loss or osteoporosis
  • Predict the risk of bone fractures
  • Determine the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatment
  • It is most commonly performed in people who are at an increased risk of osteoporosis, especially in elderly men and women.

When to Avoid:

There is no specific condition when this test should be avoided. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or taking any medications.

How to prepare:

The test is easy and painless. No special preparation is needed; however, inform your doctor if you have had barium examination or contrast material injected for a CT scan examination recently, as these chemicals might interfere with the bone density test.
